The Four Seasons

As someone who lives on the equator, season change has been alien to me. There is only summer here and it's pretty hard for me to grasp and remember the intricacies of the different seasons; they are simply non-relatable. However, I've came across the notion of four seasons quite frequently when learning Korean, and it's pretty hard to remember the words without any context in mind.

# Orbital Tilt

The orbital tilt, also known as axial tilt, is the phenomena where the Earth does not stay upright when orbiting the sun. There is a ~23.5 degrees slant which causes one part of the hemisphere to receive more sunlight during a period of time and vice versa to opposite hemisphere. The uneven sunlight exposure is what causes the seasons to manifest.

The side that accepts the sunlight the most will be summer and winter for the opposite. Spring and autumn are the transition seasons between the two extreme season.

• Time of year: March to May (in the Northern Hemisphere), September to November (Southern Hemisphere)
• Weather: Mild and warming; snow melts, and plants begin to grow again.

  • Flowers bloom (e.g., cherry blossoms, tulips).

• Feel: Feels refreshing, energetic, and hopeful.
• Mood: Often seen as a time of renewal and growth.

• Weather: Hot and sunny, long daylight hours.
• Nature:
  • Trees are full and green.
  • Many fruits ripen (e.g., berries, melons). -Insects are active.
• Feel: Feels lively, bright, and exciting.
• Mood: Vacation season in many countries; time for beaches, travel, and festivals.

# Autumn

• Time of year: September to November (Northern), March to May (Southern)
• Weather: Cool and breezy; days start getting shorter.
• Nature:
  • Leaves change color to red, orange, and yellow.
  • Trees start shedding leaves.
  • Harvest season (grains, pumpkins, apples).
• Feel: Feels cozy and reflective.
• Mood: A time of preparation for the cold, often linked with festivals like Halloween or Thanksgiving.

# Winter

• Time of year: December to February (Northern), June to August (Southern)
• Weather: Cold or freezing; snow in many places; short daylight.
• Nature:
  • Trees are bare.
  • Many animals hibernate or migrate.
  • Lakes or rivers may freeze.
• Feel: Feels quiet, calm, and introspective.
• Mood: Associated with holidays like Christmas and New Year.
